The owner of a new boutique in Five Points hopes to offer Columbia women a wide variety of clothes at affordable prices.

Unis Boutique, located at 616-I Harden St., held its grand opening Monday morning. The store is located above Baked Bear.

Owner Chungu Sellers named the boutique after her mother because that is where her love of fashion comes from.

“My mother always made sure we were well-dressed when we were growing up, and I believe that the way you dress says a lot about who you are,” Sellers said.

After spending several years working in information technology in New York and California, Sellers moved to the Columbia area a few years ago and started thinking about opening up her own business.

“After looking around, I realized that Columbia needs more variety in the women’s clothing available,” Sellers said.

Unis Boutique sells a wide variety of clothing including dresses, tops, jeans, shorts, and swimsuits. Sizes are inclusive and the prices are affordable on purpose, Sellers said, because she wants a wide variety of women to be able to shop there. She is currently working with vendors from California, New York and Nevada. The shop also sells accessories like sunglasses and shoes.

Sellers also makes all of the jewelry on sale, including beaded bracelets and earrings, and said she is available to do custom work if a customer wants a specific color scheme.

Mayor Daniel J. Rickenmann attended the store’s opening and said Unis Boutique is an example of the continued growth of small businesses around the city.

“Investing in and supporting small businesses like this is one more step toward us changing the face of our corridors around the city,” Rickenmann said. “We’ve had more than 40 openings around the city this year and it’s exciting.”

Unis Boutique will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The boutique is the latest of several businesses that have opened in Five Points in recent months. Others include The Turning Pointe at 1030 Harden St., The Innovation Center at 711 Saluda Ave., and The Flying Biscuit Cafe at 936 Harden St.
