A new Publix grocery store will be coming the Pontiac community in northeast Columbia in the near future.
The Florida-based grocery chain recently executed a lease for a site at the northwest corner of Spears Creek Church Road near Earth Road, according to a news release.
Details about when construction will start were unavailable, but the new store is projected to open in the first quarter of 2024, according to Jared Glover, media relations manager for the Charlotte division of Publix Supermarkets.
Glover said the 45,000-square-foot store will be known as Publix at Market at Spears Creek and employ about 140 people.
“We’ve continued to get numerous requests for us to expand in Columbia,” Glover said. “Our customers have grown to love our premier customer service and quality foods, and we look forward to bringing that experience to our new neighbors in this community.”
Publix has been progressively increasing its presence in South Carolina for years and currently has 65 stores in the state, including 12 in the Midlands — six in Richland County and six in Lexington County.
