Last month marked the 40th anniversary of Duvall Catering & Events bringing delicious cuisine and fine Southern hospitality to the Lowcountry.
Duvall highlighted the milestone with a grand celebration held at The Bend, 20 acres with scenic views of the Ashley River in North Charleston. The location was selected in keeping with Duvall’s commitment to “bring the azaleas back to Azalea Drive,” a vision first articulated by The Bend’s owner, Susan Pearlstine.
The gala event welcomed a crowd of 500, made up of longtime clients, friends and family. Described as a “labor of love for all Duvall departments, from culinary to operations to sales and marketing,” the event allowed them to showcase their love of all things foodie and beautiful, as well as introduce new, creative menu items while working with their favorite vendors.
When Peter “Stephen” Milewics and Dan “Duvall” Stephens came to Charleston from New York in 1978, their dream of opening a restaurant was realized with the creation of Stephen Duvall Associates, a market and catering business on East Bay Street.
Charleston was a different place then. The historic significance and natural beauty were there, of course, but the reputation as a world-class tourist and culinary destination was still years away. As their business grew, so did Charleston’s food and hospitality culture. Milewicz and Stephens cultivated lasting relationships with Charleston natives as they developed their signature blend of creative, modern cuisine with deep local roots.
Steve Wenger, a hospitality executive from Asheville, N.C., came to Charleston in 1990. His arrival coincided with Charleston’s cultural emergence, and his marriage in 1991 to theater artist Sheri Grace, a Charlestonian whose family owned a flower shop, formed a partnership that would shape the next chapter of Duvall’s growth.
The couple bought Stephen Duvall Associates, believing that food connects us to art. Their skills proved perfectly aligned with the burgeoning of the Charleston food and hospitality scene and enhanced Duvall’s reputation as the go-to caterer for Charleston’s best parties.
The company’s dedication and professionalism, over 27 years of Wenger ownership, is summed up in their “Recipe for Success,” a collection of guideposts developed over decades of creating experiences around food.
Besides being one of the Lowcountry’s most respected catering services, Duvall is the only caterer in South Carolina that is a member of Leading Caterers of America (LCA). As the LCA website states, “Leading Caterers of America and its members offer excellence in catering of all types, throughout the Unites States and Canada. Most of the top independent caterers from throughout North America are members of the Leading Caterers consortium. The resources and expertise of the Leading Caterers members are unmatched worldwide.”
Duvall’s past, present and future center around a love of great food, professional hospitality and the creative arts. The company’s unique creations originate from its home at the Midtown Event Center on Azalea Drive in North Charleston, which shares space with Sheri’s Midtown Productions theater company.
At 40 years old and with over 20,000 corporate and social events, from 15 to 5,000 guests, Duvall is dedicated to the local community, focused on local relationships and ready to cater to Charleston for the next 40 years.
