Seven new client companies have joined forces with state entrepreneurial facilitator SCRA, giving them access to mentoring and support services and potentially to grants, matching funds and investments.
Three Coastal companies have been selected by SCRA, including Blink TBI, which can diagnose concussions in as little time as 20 seconds. Its patented Reflexometer, developed about four years ago at the Medical University of South Carolina, uses puffs of air and a high-speed camera to measure the blink rate of athletes.
Research has shown that athletes with concussions blink faster than uninjured people. The company tested the technology with than 300 athletes at The Citadel in 2015 and is now working with various high school, college and professional sports teams.
SterileWave LLC’s disposable “Light Adapter” shields patients from laparoscopes during surgical procedures with the aim of decreasing infection from improperly sterilized instruments. The company is also researching imaging capabilities to improve surgical efficiency as well as other disposable surgical equipment.

Agricultural company Carolina Seed Systems uses genomic technologies to produce hybrid seeds to grow crops faster in the Southeast. Its focus is on the cereal crop sorghum, also called milo, which feeds livestock.
