Wow is now offering 1-gigabit-per-second internet service to residential and business customers in Charleston.

The new service provides customers with fast broadband service without data caps, the company said in a news release.

Charleston’s population growth and successful business recruitment have increased the need for higher speeds. Businesses, hospitals, manufacturers, colleges and tech firms, among others, rely on strong connections.

Area software and IT companies in particular have stressed the importance of having faster internet service to meet their needs. Wow said businesses are expected to increase bandwidth requirements by 30% each year.

The rollout of the 1-gigabit service is ongoing; once complete, it will cover 95% of Wow’s service area.

“We’re seeing an increasing number of families and individuals that have heavy data demands due to multiple internet-enabled devices in the home,” said Nick Moorehead, Wow’s operations director in Charleston. “Our 1-gig internet service will allow those users to game, stream, chat, shop or browse without having to worry about slow loading times or buffering.”
