The University of South Carolina School of Law is hosting a National Cybersecurity Legal Institute training on ransomware in March.

People who attend will learn best practices for preventing, navigating and responding to ransomware attacks. Presentations include how to spot a ransomware attack, trends in ransomware, whether to pay the ransom, when to hire an attorney, selecting the right cyber insurance, and how specific sectors are being targeted.

According to the National Cybersecurity Legal Institute, more than 950 organizations were victims of ransomware attacks in 2019, with an estimated $9 billion in damage. Health care, education and government sectors reported the most ransomware incidents.

Ransomware is a cybersecurity breach in which a system or device is infiltrated and access or system use is denied by a cyber attacker until a demand, usually financial, is met.

The clinic will be held March 5 at the USC School of Law in Columbia. Registration is $250 for the general public and $150 for government and nonprofit employees who register with their organizational email address. Attorneys may qualify for continuing legal education credits.
