Another South Carolina expansion has been put to bed.

Apex Mattress Manufacturing Inc. plans to invest $1.9 million to establish operations in Colleton County. The move is expected to create 50 new jobs.

Founded this year, the company produces mattresses for retail stores and e-commerce businesses.

The new facility at 304 Thunderbolt Drive in Walterboro will be the company’s first manufacturing plant, and is expected to be operational in January.

Apex President Jack Hung credits the location part the state’s business-friendly environment.

“Through our comprehensive strategic planning and study, South Carolina offers the best climate for new business, and Colleton County offers the best location for being close to both the Charleston and Savannah ports,” Hung said in a statement.

Colleton County Council Chair Steve Murdaugh called the job-creating expansion a win for the county.

“We are excited that Apex Mattress Manufacturing Inc. has decided to locate in Walterboro and look forward to forming a partnership with their management team to ensure that they have what is needed to be successful,” he said in a statement.

Manufacturing is the third-highest employer in the state, with trade, transportation and utilities as the leading industry and government as the second, per the U.S. Department of Labor.

“South Carolina continues to drive in economic growth across our state and specifically in our rural communities,” Gov. Henry McMaster said in a statement. “I congratulate Apex Mattress Manufacturing Inc. on their new facility in Colleton County, and I look forward to watching their impact grow in the Palmetto State.”
