The S.C. Department of Transportation is hosting a public information meeting Jan. 28 regarding a safety improvement project planned for U.S. 1 in Richland County.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at E.L. Wright Middle School, located at 2740 Alpine Road in Columbia.

The project involves U.S. 1, known locally as Two Notch Road, between Trenholm Road and Valhalla Drive. A preliminary concept plan for the improvements includes a raised median, accommodations for U-turns, crosswalks and ADA compliance improvements.

People interested in learning more about the project can view displays, ask questions of SCDOT employees and receive informational handouts and comment forms.

Citizens also can provide written comments. Comments must be submitted to SCDOT by Feb. 12.

Those with information regarding cultural or historic resources in the area of proposed construction are invited to share their information with SCDOT officials.

The safety improvements are part of a road safety assessment conducted by SCDOT, Richland County, the S.C. Highway Patrol, the Columbia Police Department and the Federal Highway Administration.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall.
