Motorists on Clemson Road in Northeast Columbia should expect lane closures and travel delays during the next several weeks as road construction nears completion.

On Oct. 28, crews contracted by Richland County began paving the final layer of asphalt on Clemson Road from Chimneyridge Drive to near Old Clemson Road, according to a news release from the county. Transportation officials expect lane closures and delays for northbound and southbound lanes of Clemson Road while that work continues.

Roadwork is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Drivers should seek alternate routes to avoid delays, if possible.

When complete, the project will widen Clemson Road from two to five lanes from Old Clemson Road to Sparkleberry Crossing. Shared-used paths for cyclists and pedestrians between Old Clemson Road and Chimneyridge Drive will also be added.

After paving is complete, crews will add striping and pavement markings, adjust traffic signals and finish landscaping.

The project, which the county estimates to be about 90% complete, is expected to be finished before its original early 2021 completion date.
