South Carolina Wildlife magazine is holding its inaugural personal essay contest, open to high school and college students and featuring a prize of $250.

The magazine is seeking nonfiction essays between 800 and 1,500 words focusing on the outdoors and celebrating South Carolina’s natural resources. Along with the $250 prize, made possible by the Harry Hampton Wildlife Fund, the winner will have his or her essay published in the magazine and on SouthCarolinaWild.org. The website will also feature the top five submissions.

The contest is open to currently enrolled high school and college students. Only original, unpublished work will be accepted.

All submissions should be double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font and include a cover page with the writer’s name, name, address, email, phone number and high school or university. Email submissions and/or questions to South Carolina Wildlife managing editor Cindy Thompson at [email protected]. The deadline is 5 p.m. on April 30.

Judges include magazine staff and freelance writers.
