Work is nearly complete at a park at the West Columbia Riverwalk that will allow children of all physical abilities to play together.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Carraway Park at the Riverwalk originally scheduled for Wednesday in West Columbia has been postponed until Nov. 4.

The park, near the amphitheater at West Columbia Riverfront Park, complies with Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines. It is designed to provide play opportunities for children of all physical abilities with features to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers and other assistive devices, according to a news release.

The park also includes public art installations.

“We’re very pleased to be able to offer such a quality resource that will allow families with children with special needs and those without special needs to play together in a world-class environment,” West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton said in the release. “We hope that word spreads about the park and that families from all over come to enjoy the free amenities in West Columbia.”

The public ribbon-cutting ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 4.  Students from special education classes at Riverbank Elementary and Northside Elementary Schools have been invited to attend.

Parking is available at 212 Hudson St. and in the Brookland Public Parking Garage off Court Avenue.
