Richland County is offering workshops to teach residents how to apply for Neighborhood Matching Grants through the county’s Neighborhood Improvement Program.

The Neighborhood Improvement Program offers matching grants of up to $1,500 to community organizations to help make neighborhoods better places for residents to live, work and play. The match must be provided dollar-for-dollar, in kind or by volunteer hour.

Program staff members are hosting two workshops this month to help people apply for the grants, according to a news release from Richland County.

Eligible projects must provide a public benefit to neighborhoods and their residents and must involve residents in all phases of the project. The projects also must be completed by June following the award year. Project examples include streetlight installation, community events, after-school tutoring programs or signs displaying crime watch or neighborhood entrances.

The workshops will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 and Jan. 16 in the fourth floor conference room of the county administration building at 2020 Hampton St. County employees will provide information on the grant program, answer questions and help individuals and organization representatives fill out grant applications.

The deadline to apply for a Neighborhood Matching Grant is Feb. 5.
