Shoppers around South Carolina can get a break at the cash register this weekend with the annual Tax Free Weekend that launched at 12 a.m. Friday and ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6.

The annual weekend allows parents, students and others looking for savings to purchase tax-free items in-store or online, according to information from the South Carolina Department of Revenue. In 2022, South Carolina shoppers bought more than $26.2 million in tax-free items during the weekend.

Under the law, the Tax Free Weekend must begin the first Friday of each August and conclude 72 hours later.  Eligible items can be purchased without paying the state’s six percent sales tax and any applicable local taxes. All retailers who sell eligible items must participate and can not collect sales tax from customers on eligible purchases.

Tax-free items include computers and printers, school supplies, clothing and accessories, shoes and certain bed and bath items. These items can be new or used and are eligible regardless of price.

Items not exempt from sales tax include digital cameras, smartphones, jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, wallets, watches and furniture.

A detailed list of tax-free items and more information can be found online.
