Southern Wesleyan University has received approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to offer the doctorate of education degree in curriculum and assessment.

“The thorough and creative work of our faculty in our School of Education has produced a landmark program that has the potential to change the eventual outcomes of education nationwide,” said Todd Voss, Southern Wesleyan University president, in a news release. “As our first doctoral program, we could not have found a better niche to start this doctoral level expansion journey as Southern Wesleyan grows our relevant and cost effective platform of degrees.”

The doctoral degree prepares professionals for careers in nonprofit professions, technical colleges, universities, and public and private K-12 institutions, providing critical and highly-desired institutional accountability, according to the release. Southern Wesleyan students will begin the dissertation process at the start of their program of study since the dissertation is integrated into important aspects of the program. In research courses and residencies, individuals will establish milestones and will receive faculty advisement to allow for seamless progression through dissertation development, research and defense, the release said.

Most courses are offered online, however students are required to be on campus for a one-week residency course during three summers.
