Dr. Charlie Dorn Smith III, a surgeon and member of the University of South Carolina board of trustees since 2010, is the new chair of the board.

Smith was unanimously elected to a two-year term on Friday. He replaces outgoing chair John C. von Lehe Jr., who served two terms as chair, beginning in 2016.

Smith is a native of Turbeville and a graduate of Wofford College who earned his medical degree from USC’s School of Medicine in 1985. He is board-certified in general and cardiovascular surgery, is a practicing surgeon in Kingstree and Florence, and serves as chief of surgery at Williamsburg Hospital.

Smith also is chairman and CEO of The Citizens Bank in Olanta and is secretary of the Belle W. Baruch Foundation board of trustees in Georgetown.

“I’m truly honored to be elected board chair of this great institution, and I look forward to working with my fellow board members and (USC) President (Bob) Caslen in ensuring we are providing a world-class education to our students," Smith said in a news release.
