Unemployment claims drop slightly in week

Initial unemployment claims for the week ending Oct. 3 saw a slight dip from the previous week, falling by 30 claims.

The 5,102 claims represented a drop from the 5,132 filed the week ending Sept. 26, according to data from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.

Richland County had the highest number of initial claims filed at 567, followed by Greenville County at 497. Charleston County saw 354 claims, Horry County 329 and Lexington County 274.

DEW has paid out more than $4.3 billion in combined state and federal unemployment benefits since March 15.

Initial unemployment claims peaked at 87,686 for the week ending April 18. The latest drop was the first in three weeks.
