Unemployment claims edge up, approach 750,000

Initial unemployment claims for the week ending Sept. 26 edged up from the previous week as claims filed since March 15 neared 750,000.

The 5,132 new claims represented an increase of 199 from the week ending Sept. 19 and brought the state’s total of claims filed since the pandemic took hold to 749,708, according to data from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.

The week’s total marked the fourth straight increase and third since claims dropped to their lowest level since mid-March at 4,283 at the beginning of September.

Initial weekly claims, which topped out at 87,686 for the week ending April 11, have been in quadruple digits since reaching 12,194 for the week ending July 25.

For the week ending Sept. 26, Greenville County saw a state-high 555 claims, followed by Richland County with 481. Charleston County had 361, Horry County 329 and Lexington County 265.
