The University of South Carolina will hold a series of TED talks on Oct. 9. The event is titled TEDxUofSC and will feature live talks and performances for the community and campus.

TEDxUofSC will take place from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the university’s Alumni Center at 900 Senate St. Speaker nominations are being accepted through May 24. Speaker selection will be based on potential TED talk ideas. A university affiliation is not required.

This is the university’s first TEDx event, but TEDxColumbiaSC featured four sold-out shows from 2012 to 2015 and more than 50 schools around the state take part annually in TEDxYouth@Columbia.

TEDx presentations are viewed by millions, so this partnership provides an opportunity to share our story with the world,” Wes Hickman, university spokesperson, said in a statement. “We look forward to presenting an array of speakers whose talks will spark imagination and spur learning and collaboration.”

The theme of the event is Create and coincides with a year-long university celebration during the 2018-19 academic year.

Tickets for TEDxUofSC will go on sale to the public and campus community in late July when speakers are announced.

The nonprofit organization TED began in 1984 as a way to spread ideas in the form of free, short talks that are no longer than 18 minutes. The organization hosts an annual conference and features a network of licensed, locally organized TEDx events around the world.
