The Mount Pleasant fire chief is set to retire in June after 32 years with the department.

Herbert Williams announced his retirement, effective June 8, at the town’s Fire Committee meeting on Monday.

WilliamsTown Administrator Eric DeMoura said he will begin looking for a new fire chief in consultation with Mayor Will Haynie and Town Councilman Bob Brimmer, who is chairman of the Fire Committee. According to town ordinances, a new fire chief is appointed by town council on the recommendation of the town administrator.

DeMoura said he’s taking a “hard look at who’s available inside the department” before looking at outside candidates.

“I’m looking to see who best can take what Chief Williams built and move it forward,” DeMoura said. He added that he’s looking for someone like Williams because Williams represents “the ideal candidate” for fire chief.

DeMoura said he doesn’t anticipate the need for an interim chief, saying Williams’ five months’ notice “gives us ample time to search for the right candidate.” He added that the candidate most likely will also have time to learn the ins and outs of the role from Williams before his retirement.
