The S.C. Department of Natural Resources will conduct an annual Baltimore oriole winter survey this weekend in conjunction with the Great Backyard Bird Count.
Baltimore orioles usually winter in South and Central America, according to a news release, but have been sighted in increasing numbers along the East Coast and in the Southeast during the last few decades. Last year’s count produced sightings from Massachusetts to Florida.
The survey will take place Friday through Monday. Participants count and record the largest number of Baltimore orioles they see at one time on one or all of the days of the survey period.
