U.S. Presidential Scholars class includes 4 S.C. students

The 55th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars includes four high school seniors from South Carolina.

The 161 students were chosen for accomplishments in academics, the arts and career and technical education, according to a news release from the S.C. Department of Education. The class includes one male and one female student from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico and U.S. families living abroad, as well as 15 at-large recipients, 20 arts scholars and 20 scholars in career and technical education.  

The 2019 Presidential Scholars from South Carolina are:

• Amber Magnuson, S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts
• Jackson B. Woodward Radcliffe, Ashley Ridge High School, Dorchester School District Two, U.S. Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education
• Dashiell Charles Miller Stevanovich, Socastee High School, Horry County Schools
• Jiaying Tong, Riverside High School, Greenville County Schools

The scholars are selected each year by the U.S. Department of Education’s Commission on Presidential Scholars based on academic achievement, artistic and technical excellence, essays and school transcripts and evaluations, as well as community service and leadership.

The program, created in 1964, has honored more than 7,500 students. A ceremony honoring the 2019 scholars will be held in Washington, D.C., on June 23.
