Mex 1 Coastal Cantina is offering a new poke bowl beginning Thursday. The dish, inspired by a surf trip to Hanalei Bay on Kauai, Hawaii, will be ahi poke with cucumber, avocado, rainbow carrots, mango, and yucca chips, served over Hanalei rice, topped with toga sauce.


Chef Sean Mendes of Gillie’s Seafood has been selected as one of nine chefs nationally to kick off the second year of its Rediscovering America program.

The program emphasizes making fresh, quality produce available to everyone, as well as supporting farmers and responsibly sourcing produce.

Mendes has added a Farmer’s Casserole to his menu inspired by the produce found at Walmart. The dish will be served at Gillie’s Seafood, at 805 Folly Road, through Wednesday.


Hamby Catering is offering a new football to-go menu at The Market at Hamby. The Halftime Eats menu features an assortment of classic snacks for feeding large groups at tailgates and football parties.

All menu items are sold a la carte.

Featured dishes include 12 assorted pieces of Southern fried chicken; slow-roasted pulled pork with Carolina vinegar and slider rolls; muscadine barbecue meatballs; smoked ribs; and tacos. Sides include homemade Cajun pork rinds; Carolina slaw; Buffalo chicken dip and tortilla chips; jalapeno pimento cheese with homemade potato chips; and seven-layer dip of refried beans, chipotle sour cream, guacamole, salsa, cheddar cheese, scallions and tomato pico with tortilla chips.

West & Wilder sparkling rose, homemade Florida citrus lemonade and fresh-brewed iced tea are also available.

Orders can be picked up during regular store hours, Monday through Saturday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Orders can be placed online via email or by calling 843-725-4035. Advance notice of 24 hours is requested.


The Wine & Spirit Education Trust’s wine school certification is being offered in Charleston starting Oct. 19.

Thomas George, who holds the WSET Level 4 Diploma certification, the highest qualification offered by the WSET, is conducting the class, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Charleston Wine & Food office at 635 Rutledge Ave. in downtown Charleston.

WSET qualifications are the international standard in wine and spirit knowledge, designed for those who are just starting out in their careers, as well as established professionals, and the many enthusiasts who have a passion for wines and spirits.

The Level 1 course includes the main types and styles of wine; common wine grapes and their characteristics; how to store and serve wine; the principles of food and wine pairing; and how to describe wine using the organization’s Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine.
