SC Biz News is once again recognizing difference-makers in the health care industry with its Health Care Heroes Awards — but with a twist. For the first time this year’s recognition is a statewide honor.

The recognition program honors individuals who go above and beyond to help make South Carolina a healthier, safer, and happier place to live and work.

The 2023 class of Health Care Heroes represents diverse talent, expertise and a commitment to excellence in their endless pursuit to help others.

This year’s recognition ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Dec. 7 at the DoubleTree Hotel Columbia.

In 2023, we will honor health care heroes in the following categories:

• Community Service: Individuals who have gone above and beyond to serve their communities, providing essential healthcare support and fostering wellness.
• First Responder: Courageous individuals who act as the first line of defense, responding swiftly and selflessly to emergencies, providing critical medical care when every second counts.
• Health Care Professional: Dedicated experts who exhibit an unwavering commitment to delivering compassionate and comprehensive healthcare, ensuring the well-being of their patients with expertise and empathy.
• Health Care Researcher: Visionary investigators who tirelessly explore new frontiers of medical knowledge, conducting groundbreaking research to advance our understanding and find innovative solutions to improve health outcomes.
• Nurse: Compassionate caregivers who demonstrate exceptional skill, empathy, and resilience, offering vital support and comfort to patients and their families throughout their healthcare journey.
• Physician: Highly skilled medical practitioners who combine their expertise, clinical understanding, and compassionate care to diagnose, treat, and heal patients, embodying the pinnacle of medical excellence.
• Service/Therapy Animal: Four-legged companions who bring immeasurable joy, comfort, and therapeutic benefits to patients, offering solace and support in healthcare settings with their loving presence.
• Volunteer: Selfless individuals who generously donate their time, skills, and compassion to support healthcare organizations and positively impact the lives of those in need.
• Future Medical Leader: Aspiring medical students who display exceptional promise and leadership qualities, embodying the future of healthcare with their dedication to learning, innovation, and service.
• Mentor of the Year: Inspirational educators who serve as guiding lights, imparting their wisdom and expertise to shape the next generation of healthcare professionals, impacting their students’ careers and lives.
• Inspirational Teaching Award: Remarkable educators who ignite a passion for healthcare, using their innovative teaching methods and unwavering commitment to inspire and empower students to become compassionate and knowledgeable healthcare providers.
