South Carolinians file 46,747 unemployment claims in week
The number of unemployment claims for the week ending May 2 dropped by 18,412 from the previous week, according to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce. The national unemployment rate rose to 14.7%.
Benefitfocus lays off 250 people
Charleston-based Benefitfocus said it is laying off 17% of its U.S. workforce, a total of 250 employees, in response to the impact that COVID-19 is having on its business. In addition, all raises and promotions have been suspended.
S.C. unemployment claims drop for 2nd straight week
For the week ending April 25, 65,159 claims were filed, down 7,957 from the previous week. In the last 6 weeks, 406,889 claims have been filed, according to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.
Unemployment claims drop in S.C. for first time in 5 weeks
For the week ending April 18, 73,116 people filed initial unemployment claims, according to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce. That represents a decrease of 14,570 from the previous week.
S.C. has paid out $67.5M in unemployment benefits since March 21
The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce has also paid out $105.1 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funds from the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program.
Unemployment ticks up in survey completed March 12
The latest S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce survey, which predated many closures related to COVID-19, found employment climbed to 2.6% in March from 2.5% in February. Nationally, unemployment rose from 3.5% to 4.4%.

The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce said 87,686 people filed unemployment claims from April 5 to April 11. Greenville County saw 10,378 claims filed. DEW says it has processed 268,614 claims since March 14.
