Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. ATTENTION: Submissions should now be made using our online form.

The Charleston Friends of the Library is hosting the John’s Island Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. July 26 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 27 at the John’s Island Regional Library, at 3531 Maybank Highway. More than 10,000 gently used books, CDs, DVDs and audiobooks will be available for purchase.

Trio Solutions Inc., a Mount Pleasant-based marketing communications agency, is hosting its 13th annual CreateAthon, where it will offer free marketing services to local nonprofits in a 24-hour blitz Oct. 24-25.

Trio will be accepting applications from nonprofits from Monday through Aug. 16. Applicants must fill out a form and submit a 60-second video on why their organization should be selected.

The 24-hour creative marathon was started by Riggs Partners in Columbia more than 20 years ago. Trio joined in 2007 and has supported more than 60 nonprofits, as well as provided more than $500,000 in pro bono services.

Make-A-Wish South Carolina has named Amanda Osborne as vice president of mission advancement. Osborne will help build relationships and engagement with constituents throughout the state. She will also serve as a leader to a team of development staff members.

Applications are now open for the S.C. Ports Authority’s annual Community Giving Program. The SCPA awarded $106,000 in grants to 54 charitable organizations around the state in fiscal 2019 through the program.

Applicants must demonstrate a fit within maritime commerce, economic development, environmental awareness or community outreach. Awards of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000 are available. Programs with measurable, sustained impacts receive priority during the selection process.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. July 31.

The Junior League of Charleston is volunteering at the Lowcountry Food Bank during the 2019-20 school year. The Junior League will work with the nonprofit’s Backpack Buddies program, which sends food home on the weekends with children who are at risk of food insecurity in Berkeley and Charleston counties.

The Junior League is volunteering nine times at the food bank during the school year and will assemble 13,400 packs for children through April. The nonprofit is also contributing $4,000 to support the Backpack Buddies program.

Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County is partnering with Hunter Quinn Homes to build a new habitat home in 60 hours for a future homeowner in Moncks Corner. The Home Builders Blitz is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. Sept. 16 and will conclude at 1 p.m. Sept. 21.

Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center has been awarded a $50,000 grant from The Leon Levine Foundation based in Charlotte. The grant will support Dee Norton’s assessment, treatment and coordination services for children in the Lowcountry.

The ARK, Alzheimer’s Family Support Services, is hosting a two-day Powerful Tools for Caregivers leader training from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 12-13.

The class prepares and certifies individuals to lead the six-week Powerful Tools for Caregivers class series, an educational program designed to help family caregivers take care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend who has a chronic illness.

The cost is $350 per person.
