First it was Air Jordan, and now it’s Star-Lord himself.

Only five weeks into the year, the Lowcountry Food Bank is receiving another celebrity donation, this time $20,000 by Chris Pratt.

The actor, who is best known for his roles in the Avengers movies and on TV’s Parks and Recreation, partnered with Greater Good Charities to launch the Feed Thy Neighbor campaign. The initiative raised $650,000 to help fight food insecurity across the U.S., especially as a result of the coronavirus.

Half of the funds went to Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. The Lowcountry Food Bank is a member of its network and received $20,000 in raised funds.

Pratt, who conceptualized the Feed Thy Neighbor initiative, donated $100,000 of his own in matching funds.

“One in four kids in America this year may not know where their next meal is coming from,” Pratt said. “The need is real. People are in pain.”

Thanks to The Hunger Site by Greater Good and 12 Tomatoes covering all credit card processing fees, 100% of the donations went to Greater Good Charities — which in turn granted out 100% of the money.

“Feed Thy Neighbor was created as a result of the dual crisis effecting those trying to battle food insecurity that was caused by the coronavirus pandemic,” Liz Baker, CEO of Greater Good Charities, said. “First there is a meal shortage for food banks serving our most vulnerable; meanwhile, these same frontline groups are experiencing a decline in donations.”

To encourage donations, Pratt offered up the opportunity to hang out with him on Zoom as he hosted New Year’s Eve Instagram live.

The Lowcountry Food Bank is also receiving a little love from Subaru’s philanthropic initiative, Love Promise. Subaru and retailers across the country are donating to help provide an additional 100 meals to Feeding America.

North Charleston’s Crews Subaru wants to help make an even more localized impact with the campaign. Through Sunday, the dealership will donate dollar-for-dollar all donations to the organization up to $10,000. The food bank said $1 can help provide six meals.
