S.C. DOT announces Upstate roadway improvement projects

The S.C. Department of Transportation is providing public notification of Appalachian Regional Commission project funding and proposed roadway improvements in Anderson and Pickens counties in the Upstate.

In Anderson County, Project NASA provides roadway access improvements to a new innovation center and a future test lab, according to a news release. The proposal includes the construction of a new two-lane road from Wigfall Drive to Ryobi Drive, as well as improvements to Wigfall Road. Improvements include widening, curb and gutter installation, sidewalk improvement, a turn lane at Scotts Bridge Road and installing solar-powered lighting. The Appalachian Regional Commission is covering $3 million of the cost and $1.86 million is being covered by local funds, the release said.

The funding by phase of work includes:

  • Preliminary engineering – $430,000
  • Right-of-way – $30,000
  • Construction – $4.4 million

In Pickens County, S.C. DOT seeks to provide safety improvements at the intersection of S.C. Route 93 (East Main Street) and Clayton Street in the town of Central. The improvements include realigning the existing intersection to improve sight distance, constructing a 40-foot long median on Clayton Street to provide separation of the ingress and egress traffic movements, and providing traffic control and turn lanes on Clayton Street, according to the release.

The Appalachian Regional Commission and the Pickens CTC are each contributing $298,588 to the cost of the project. The town of Central is providing $81,012.

Estimated funding by phase of work includes:

  • Preliminary engineering – $10,000
  • Right-of-way – $5,000
  • Construction – $663,200
