GSP upgrades parking options, plans fee increase

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport has upgraded its parking options by offering a shuttle between the economy lots to the terminal, the addition of an overflow parking lot, an expended cell phone lot and a new parking guidance system from the airport’s garages. Parking prices are scheduled to increase Oct. 1.

“We are looking forward to providing new services to improve the experiences that passengers have while at GSP,” said Dave Edwards, GSP president and CEO, in a news release. “Some of these updates, including the shuttle bus service, have been suggested through customer surveys. We take that feedback seriously and attempt to meet those requests when possible.”

Economy parking lot A is GSP’s new overflow parking lot, but will eventually have regular hours of operation, according to the release. This lot only accepts credit and debit card payments. The existing economy parking lot is now economy parking lot B.

In all, the airport has 443 new parking spaces, the release said.

Parking costs at GSP also are changing. Starting Oct. 1, economy lot prices will be $6 a day instead of the current $5, and sky lot prices will be $9 a day instead of the current $7. Garage prices will be $15 a day; up from $14. Valet prices will be $17 a day, up from $16. Daily Lot prices will remain the same at $9 a day.

Park Assist, a parking guidance system, has been installed in both parking garages at GSP. Signs are in place to indicate rows with open parking spaces, including the number of available stalls. Park Assist uses smart-sensor camera-based technology that can recognize license plates while displaying real-time parking availability. If a passenger forgets where they parked, they can type their license plate number into a kiosk by the garages’ second-floor elevators to locate their vehicle, according to the release.

“People often have a lot on their mind when traveling and many of us have experienced times when we can’t remember where we parked before a flight or feel like we’re wasting precious time while anxiously searching for an open parking space,” said Scott Carr, GSP vice president of commercial business and communications, in the release. “This new parking amenity should make flying from GSP a little easier.”

The new parking lot was designed by Michael Baker International. GLF Construction served as the contractor. AVCON provided construction phase engineering assistance.
