Some of the greats of bluegrass and ‘nu-grass’ will be showing up on Upstate marquees this fall, starting with next Monday’s performance of four-time Grammy Award-winner Sarah Jarosz and some champion fiddlers from closer to home this weekend at Hagood Mill.
S.C. State Old Time Fiddling Convention
Appalachian musicians from all corners of the state will gather around Pickens’ Hagood Mill Friday and Saturday to vie for the title of champion at the S.C. State Old Time Fiddling Convention.
The event kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday with Golden Shoals and the Carolina All-Star String Band, composed of members of the West End String Band, Queen family and Pretty Little Goat Band. Tickets to the concert are $5 per person with food available for sale at 6:30 p.m. Admission for the festival is $5 and includes entrance to the Hagood Mill Historic Site and Heritage Pavilion and Hagood Creek Petroglyph Site. Camping at the event will be available.
Bluegrass session at Oolenoy Community House
If you can’t make the bluegrass session at Pickens’ Oolenoy Community House this Friday starting at 7 p.m., you can catch your local pickers or join in on the jam any Friday night. There is no admission fee for the event, but donations help pay the rent at the old schoolhouse on 5301 Dacusville Highway.
Laurie Fisher plays at the River Falls Lodge
For those who can’t help but move their feet when they hear the hum of a fiddle or the twang of a banjo, the River Falls Lodge holds contra dances to live Appalachian music each week in Jones Gap country.
Square and line dancers might find contra steps familiar, but beginners are always welcomed with a tutorial from 7:30 to 8 p.m. The dance follows until 11 p.m. Tickets for entry at the dance hall, located at 150 Falls Lodge Road in Marietta are $10. Dance hosts strongly encourage all dancers to be vaccinated for COVID-19.
Sarah Jarosz at The Peace Center’s White Claw Concerts
One-third of Americana supergroup I’m With Her, Jarosz will perform at the Peace Center at 7:30 on Monday, Sept. 20, with lawn tickets starting at $35 and a seat in the Genevieve theater lounge at $55. The singer also plays the banjo, guitar and mandolin.
