Father Jonathon Duncan with Bon Secours St. Francis medical center led a blessing of the fully framed facility that is expected to open next summer. About 50 donors, clients, staff and volunteers attended the ceremony. Many of them took the opportunity to scribble inspiring messages on the framework that is soon to be covered as construction continues — covered but still there so long as the building is there.

Neighborhood Cancer Connection, until recently known as the Cancer Society of Greenville County, is building the $4.5 million center under the new name to better reflect its goals, reach and clientele, the organization said it announced the new name in August.

Renovation of the site includes demolishing a structure that was there and replacing it with a 6,900-square-foot space, doubling the square footage of the organization’s current space.

With framing complete, the Neighborhood Cancer Connection has 80% of its fundraising goal for the project. The Neighborhood Cancer Connection offers financial aid and other services to cancer patients in every corner of Greenville County. Services include counseling support; financial support; nutrition and disposable items; and equipment and accessories, such as wheelchairs, walkers, ostomy supplies and breast prostheses.

Construction on the new center is under the direction of Creative Builders Inc., working with plans from architects McMillan Pazdan Smith. Other vendors in the project are BlueWater Civil Design, Mcleod Landscape Architects, Fuller Group, Peritus Engineers, Burdette Engineering and Bunnell Lammons Engineering.
