Home Telecom is building a 20,000-square-foot, two-story office building and customer service center at CoOp@Nexton that will include 8,000 square feet of shared office space or concept offices for small and startup businesses. (Rendering/The Middleton Group)Ground has been broken on a new commercial center at Nexton, the 5,000-acre master-planned community along Interstate 26 in Summerville.

The CoOp@Nexton complex will include a two-story, 20,000-square-foot office and retail center, a midrise apartment community and a 4,500-square-foot Refuel gas station and market, according to a news release.

The complex will also include green space with multiple trails, an open lawn for activities and several shaded spaces.

The office and retail building is being built by Home Telecom, which will have a customer service center on the first floor. The remaining 5,200 square feet of that floor will be for office or retail space.

The second floor will consist of 8,000 square feet of shared office space or concept offices for small and startup businesses. It will have 10-gigabit internet access for tenants.

The building is expected to open by May 2020.

Home Telecom President William Helmly said in the release that the company is “a natural fit” for CoOp@Nexton as the master-planned community’s technology partner.

“This high-tech building provides the ideal location and resources for employees and the inclusion of concept offices fills a void for Summerville’s growing number of small, entrepreneurial business owners,” Helmly said.

The Spectrum Cos. is also building a 345-unit multifamily community at CoOp@Nexton. The upscale apartments will include several floor plans and some carriage-style units. Spectrum expects to break ground in the fall and open the community in spring 2021.

“This project will provide a high-quality multifamily housing option and offer easy access to employment centers and lifestyle amenities in this fast-growing part of the Charleston region,” Spectrum Vice President Ian Wagoner said.
