King Street project reaches construction milestone

The key stakeholders for a five-story office project on King Street hit a significant construction milestone this week.

Trident Construction, along with contractors, architects and Atlantic South Development, held a topping-out ceremony this week, including the signing of the final steel beam before it was place atop the building.

The 84,000-square-foot office building at 677 King St. is a part of a $30 million project that includes retail spaces on the first floor, as well as parking, Trident said in a news release. The project is set to be completed next summer.

Trident said the two blocks between Coming and King streets will be developed. The area includes several Charleston single houses, an architectural style used from 1750 to 1863, according to Gerald Foster in the book American Houses. One of the most well-known examples of a Charleston single house is the Thomas Legare house on Church Street.

“It was designed to accommodate the semitropical climate as well as the city’s layout of many narrow but deep house lots,” Foster said.

Trident said that many of the houses will be renovated and used as office space, but some will be moved to a lot and used as housing.
